A Nice Quirky Surprise.

The signage is pink, that should have been my first clue./La señalización es rosa, esa debería haber sido mi primera pista.

Full disclosure, I was not trying to travel during Labor Day. Being physically and mentally drained from all the traveling I’ve been doing, add pursuing my master’s degree, and all I wanted was my bed, gummy bears, and Murder She Wrote. Yet, two days before the holiday, Hyatt sent me an email about a new group of small boutique hotels that had recently opened. I closed it, thinking, “Nope, you have to rest,” fast forward to Labor Day, and I’m in a car driving to Richmond, VA, to visit The Quirk Hotel.

Quirk Hotel lives up to its name; it would be adorable if I described it in one word. All I kept thinking from the outside to what’s awaiting you inside was, “how freaking adorable.” Located at 201 W Broad St, Richmond, VA 23220, which was very odd. The reason is that Broad Street isn’t the best neighborhood, and the parking situation is valet parking, which I mean if you trust valet parking, more power to you, but it’s not a great/safe selling point. Other than that, I had a fantastic time and will go back for maybe a 1-night excursion.

If you are a lover of pink, then this hotel is for you!!! Every bedroom is colored pink; now, if the thought of pink makes you break out in hives, don’t worry; the color is very light, almost like a blush, depending on where the light hits. The manager did say that they are opening two more Quirks in Durham and Charlotte and will not be pink!! Every room has a retro pink small igloo refrigerator, a cute small mini bar, and a pink ice bucket. The bathroom is very minimalistic, with a fantastic walk-in shower. The dresser drawers are multitasking with steps attached to look outside or take a selfie. Local artists donate all the art in the hotel, there is a full bar in the lobby, and the courtyard is lovely and peaceful if you have to study or write a paper; sorry, forever thinking about homework. The one thing that I love is the very soft robe; depending on your Hyatt membership, you can also receive slippers at check-in.

We then were taken to see the fantastic rooftop/bar/common area. Unfortunately, they were still setting up during the tour, so we didn’t see the full effect. The rooftop is two levels depending on what vibe you want. I am very excited for the fall season to enjoy the full rooftop lights situation. Did I mention the bar because it is a sight to behold? Every drink, every way you want it, is up for grabs. The bartender that day was very knowledgeable and had a great tattoo sleeve. I wish I got a picture, but she had to serve another customer.

The décor in the lobby is just beyond words; nothing matches, yet they all compliments each other. The showstopper, in my opinion, is the winding metal staircase, which is just no words. I expect all the Instagram Girls to take various pictures either on or around it. The main thing I took from The Quirk, whether in the lobby, hallway, elevator, courtyard or bedroom, is that it’s all very Instagram-ready. I like this hotel because it does the hard part for you and gives you unique backgrounds and tons of natural light.

So, to recap. Pros: adorable, tiny hotel, personal interactions guaranteed, Instagram ready, fantastic bar, and rooftop situation. Cons: valet parking, not much to do, and located in a slightly unsafe neighborhood.
